Oldest Operational Farm in Coshocton County

Schumaker Farms, owned by Jim and Wendy Schumaker, was established in 1806 by Jim’s ancestors who raised a variety of livestock.  Jim’s great-grandfather, Francis McGuire Jr. was known through the mid-1800s as a leader in livestock improvement in the area and sold a portion of the land to Jim’s grandmother, Frannie.

The original farm sat on 1,496 acres. Today, about 140 acres remain after selling and buying back land through the years.  A portion of the current farmhouse is also original to the 1800s.

Jim’s parents, Robert and Martha Schumaker enjoyed growing produce at the farm, a tradition that continues today. Schumaker Farms is still known for its sweet corn in the summer and pumpkins in the fall but offers a wide variety of other produce as well.  In addition to produce, Schumaker farms also currently sells bulk mulch, gravel, top soil, mushroom compost, straw, hay, limestone and BBQ sauce. The farm offers catering and has an event venue on site. The farm’s petting zoo is open year-round.

The legacy continues with Jim and Wendy’s son, Chad and his wife who have been working to grow the operation and will continue to keep Schumaker Farms in the family.
